I have a gauge in my boat that says "Pressure"
It never seems to register anything and I assume it aint working.

There is also a small diam tube the comes out of the head which has what looks like a car tube valve along it.
Can be seen between the plugs here ::
http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=527/1413head-med.jpg
Only had the unit for a while, curious as to whether pressure and temp gauges are essential.

There is supposed to be a very small wirelike plastic line that connects to the guage from the fitting you describe.

It should read maybe a few to as many as 15 psi at high engine speeds. It's used to indicate waterpump condition and is not an item used in standard trim.

Weather or not you want to use it is up to you.

A bit of feedback..
Used boat on the weekend, and found that the gauge DOES work. Sits on about 3-5 p.s.i
