i have a 50 merc serial# 2742418. i don't know the year for sure. i think late 60's. i was river fishing and i hit bottom, i broke my prop and the e-clip on the shifter shaft went. i bought some new parts for it and decided while i had it apart i should put in a new water pump. now everything seems to work but the water pump. i even put the old pump back in and it doesn't work either. i hope someone out there has an idea what i'm doing wrong. also is there a thermosat in this motor and could that be the problem? thanks for any help. dannymac

Re: merc 50 water pump

sounds like you need a service manual cheif.

take the lower unit off, and attach a garden hose with a hose clamp over the water pick up tube. with the motor not running, it should still pump water like normal, if not look for a blockage someplace.

blow some compressed air in the pee tube.
stick a wire in the pee tube, may be some goo in there.

but definately get the manual......

No thermostats on your Merc. Make sure the impeller is keyed to the driveshaft. If not the shaft turns but the impeller doesn't make enough speed to pump water. Phatmanmike is right. The Seloc manuals for those mercs are real good....geeterdone.

make sure you have the lock key in the impeller or it will just spin on the shaft
