bought 67' 50hp merc ser. #2119719 last year well maintained garage kept whole life. since 1st run on water, seems to reach only half potential. acts like its getting too much fuel and wont clear out. new plugs and cleaning contacts in distributor cap are about all i have done other than new bulb in fuel line. before messing with a lot of stuff i would like to know where to start. i've gotten a little scared reading some prev. inquires
another issue is no water out pee hole. impeller is new, i have not taken out thermostat yet. assuming that i can resolve this prob. is there potential relevance to performance prob. while forcing water into water pick up tube, water returns back into lower shaft: and with engine running with ears on water warms coming from prop center. i had discovered that prev owner had pinched pee tube under powerhead between cowl. however even since freeing that issue, still no water.
should i begin w/carbs or ingition. i also have extra ignition box for whatever that may be worth.
thanks a million. daddy needs to get little girl back on water sooon catchin' fish

Try backflushing with a hose via the pee-hole to clear out any blockage. It works really well.

Do a compression check as a matter of routine and clean your carbs/check fuel pumps.

A lot of the early 50 HP engines had a fitting at the bottom of the exhaust plate in were prown to plugging up most had a nother hole taped in the top of the powerhead for a water presure gauge and you could plug the original and move to the top one for the telltale
