Merc 500 Lower Unit?

Hello lookin for some help. Just the other day I was looking at my Merc and noticed the prop was sticking out more then normal so I grabbed it and wiggled it a little bit and the whole prop and guts came out of the lower unit. Threads stripped and all and some other parts where cracked and bent. I think its cause there was water left in the lower unit and it froze over the winter. Has anybody else heard of this happening?? Or must just be my luck. Also do I have to replace the whole lower unit? I found a 1974 lower unit on ebay for a good price but not sure if it will fit cause my merc is 1975. I would appreciate any help or advice very much. Thanks

sounds like water in the lower unit, oil change every fall, should help with that ever happening again. as for the lower unit, sorry i cannot help you.im not sure about the years and mix and matching.

You may have to replace the entire gearcase. Check each fall (and more regularly) to see that the gear grease is gold or black. Whitish grease indicates water, and a leaking seal. Best to drain and refill the gearcase before winter if the motor's stored at freezing temperatures.

For matching the gearcase, you must consult the Mercury parts manual to see what matches.
