Just come across a merc 500, vintage unknown but as a guess I would say late 70,s early 80,s (do not know where to I/D a merc as I have only owned Johnson / Evinrudes to this time)
Motor is not siezed is 4 cylinder and is visually in good shape bottom unit goes in and out of gear both forward and reverse. It is on a "junk" hull with a huge transom crack and a so so trailer. I am only interested in it for the motor. Current owner wants to sell it as is without trying to wake up the motor so my offer if any will be based on that.
Any thoughts on approximate value ???
I was thinking of offering no more than $150.00
Thanks for any and all input.
Ken.

Re: Merc 500 ??

Hey Ken,

Outboards are of those items thats hard to give a value for sight unseen. They made 4cyl 50hp from 1963 through 1985 then not until the late 90's. They are a great motor.

Without knowing its actual health, or maintenance history the value can be from nil to infinity. The condition of the boat may be a sign of neglect overall... be cautious.

That said... your $150 certainly seems appropriate for a blind motor & trailer. Likely worth more, and if it is in good health its definitely worth more.

Good luck.

p.s. serial number should be on the transom brackets, between and above the bracket T-handles in the front. If newer, it may have a label on the side of the transom bracket instead. With a serial number you can ascertain year of manufacture, and more importantly be able to order parts for it etc.

Thanks for that. I have no problem risking $150 on everything, but will cost me to get rid of the old hull. I am sure they dont want that left sitting on their driveway !!!!

Landfill locally charged me about $25 to offload a hull. I believe its weight based if I recall.

Good luck.
