Merc 50HP 500 series need timing marks please

Hello,<br />I have a 1974 merc 50 HP 500 series (thunderbold ignition) S/N #7031352 long shaft. I just recieved this motor and was going through the clean up process. I noticed the timing belt was very loose. (so loose it has jumped cogs). on the flywheel there are two marks on the side of it. I dont know which one lines up to the distributer's timing mark? Would someone be so kind as to let me know which marks I'm lining up together and is it better to take the dist's pulley off or the flywheel's pulley off to replace? (these timing marks on the flywheel are apx. 40 degrees away from each other)? Thank You in advance for any and all help!!!<br />Kevin Ewasiuk

These pages is for Mercury 500 starting with 1965. I don't know if your 1974 has the same specifications.
