I would check the fuel pump and the pick up in the tank. if it loses the prime would think the pump may be plumbed backward so check valve is not keeping the fuel in the system.

the pick up is clear in the tank also the fuel pump is plumbed right the check valves are in right fuel will go into the bottom of the pump but not back out and the top of the fuel pump fuel will come out but not back it also I removed the pump and primed the bulb fuel comes out like it should but when it runs with the pump off no fuel comes out of the pump

Re: Merc 60 fuel problem

have you replaced the bulb in the fuel line some times the check valve in there goes bad and fuel will run back down into the tank? The only other thing I can think of is something plugged between the fuel pump and carb, chunk of stuff in the line or the float is sticking closed and when you squeeze the prime bulb it forces it open enough to keep fuel flowing. I have a 67-68 6hp that is waiting on me to figure out how to get the lower unit lose original owner said impeller has never been replaced and I can not get the lower unit to drop,
my 9.8 has never stuck that tight.
