Hi Merc folks' I am a OMC kinda guy by default, very few Merc's in my neck of the woods, A guy tells me he has a mid 1980's Merc 65hp that has been sitting for 4 years he says it ran at that time, says it won't turn over by hand now? but thinks it is just weather seized. again I work on allot of Omc stuff, but I'v had little merc time..do you think I should risk the $50.00 he is asking? it comes with the controls also,, He has a solid reputation for being a straight up kinda person, in our small town. and I'v always wanted to get my hands on A Merc just for the fun of it, what do you think? thanks

It a 73-76 model if a 3 cylinder and the 4 cylinder is earlier than that. The 3 cylinder in my opinion is the better motor as the 4 was not a direct charge and was only made for a limited time. If the 3 cylinder its worth $50 to tinker with.....

re-merc 65 $50.00 should risk it? well it turns out the motor is mod#2999661 is this a 1966, I paid 30.00 for it after I did a compression check 100-105 on all 4 cylinders. the motor is very clean for its age, but there are things bolted onto the pwr head that I have no clue what they are, the thing below the starter, are there points under the distributor cap? so much to learn. could you experts tell me the basic of the motor, like does it have points, what type carburetors, is it a 12 volt system? any other tip/advise will be priceless. thanks kb

`you got a good deal. the mercury service manual for you model is listed on ebay often $15.00 , start there and a parts list. has no points and i wouldn't fool with anything till you have a better idea what your doing . post pics if you can. john'soldmercs.com is a good site for old mercury motors/collectors. the parts diagrams at crowley marine to identify parts which you will be able to get at many places

Thanks so much'' I'll put photos up tomorrow, Yep I have a merc service manual, I just have never really got into it because I rarely run across merc's thanks for the site tip, The manual I have covers both 3 & 4 cylinder 650 models, I wish it did not it only makes it more confusing, And yes I only did a compression test because it was a safe bet. I have much to learn before a wrench goes near it, good news is I'm in no rush.....
