merc 7.5 not pumping enough water-what to do?

It looks like my recently acquired merc (s/n 6467028) is not pumping enough water through as it gets too hot and locks. Before doing any further damage, has anybody got some tips a sto what could be the reason and what to do about it. A local workshop has quoted AUS$400 to fix it, which I do not have as I spend the maoney to actually buy the bloody thing. It would be helpful if you can point me to any website where I could obtain some diagrams, showing the different parts and how they go toghether. As I am an electromechanic technician with no experience with outboards,this would help me understand any contributions/ ideas you may have.<br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Some of the little Merc had 2 different size drive shafts. You need drive shaft size when buying impeller. If the wrong one has been installed it will not pump enough water.
