Merc. 7.5 water pump install HELP!!!

I have a mercury kiekhaefer 7.5hp motor S/N 2813717. When I removed the water pump i notice that it did not have a oil seal. <br /> - My parts list says it should have an oil seal. <br /> - The manual I am working with says to install a oil seal.<br /> - The oil pump kit has a new oil seal.<br /><br />The question is should I install a oil seal where there was not one when in the original instalation?

the only oil seal in that deal is in the water pump base.... remove the top oil vent screw and pry out base there is also an oring around base...chances are your driveshaft is rusty or sealcut..so if you dont want to open a can of worms stick the impeller in... put new l/u oil in and run it
