Merc 7.5 - Wont run at low speed

I have a Merc. 7.5 horse that i believe is a 1978. It will not stay running unless the throttle is opened way up. Also must always choke to get started. It seems to run fine if I can get it moving and leave the speed up. I had taken it to a shop for the problem , (They werent in bussiness long ) Was told they rebuilt the carb and fuel pump but still have the same problem. Any suggestions, Thank You

Welcome to iboats. Poor compression. Fuel pump runs on compression also, so even if it's like new, poor compression will not operate it.<br />If the compression checks good, remove the exaust port plate,and clean the carbon out.
