I have a merc 700 with thunderbolt ignition serial number starts with 457.... my problem is the boat does not do over 6mph it starts up and idles pretty good shakes a little but when i go to add gas past 1/2throttle (to go faster than 6mph) it stalls and dies in about 3seconds. well during the course of investigating problem at lake i put boat in reverse engine popped up having not engaged reverse lock and fell back in water. went into foward gear and was able to cruis around lake at full throttle perfectly the next day at the lake it would not go faster than 6mph again. i got the fealling at home after investigation that it had to be a spark problem because there is plenty of gas getting to carbs. when i pulled the spark plugs to replace #1 and 2 were completly wet with unburnt oil and fuel and #3 looked fine. i got a spark tester and tested spark with new plugs and was getting about 15kv on all cylanders. continued investigation and found a faulted wire that shorted right before connecting to rectifier from stator reconnected wire and wrapped with elec tape.
Any ideas about what could be the problem is welcome i beleive it is easier spark or electrical related i havnt had the time to retest after fixing wire and replacing plugs. any other ideas but someting shook back into place causing it to work for a bit.
Im just a little upset that it ruined my fishing trip.
