Merc 75 Wiring insulation problems

I have a merc 75 7.5hp s/n 2813717(1970)given to me by a freind. The wiring insulation is cracking and the wire leading to the ignition coils appears corroded (green and strands break easily). <br /><br />Are these wires "hard wired" to the stator?<br />Can I just replace these wires without replacing the stator?<br /><br />Henry

It is hard wired. I tried to cut back and splice wires to get a good connection and it worked, at least for a little while. If I had to do it again, I would have just replaced it to begin with. I guess it would depend on how bad it is.
