Merc 850: Do I need to drop lower cowl to R&R Control Cables?

Hi,

I have the Merc Service Manual for my engine; but even so it is not clear to me exactly how to remove the control cables. The pictures in the manual look as if they were taken with the lower cowl removed. There is a retaining clamp "thingy" that holds the throttle cable brass adjuster in place. I can release the clamp...but it hits against the lower cowling and doesn't seem to open far enough to allow the cable to be removed.

Should I go ahead and lower the cowling...or is there something I'm missing?

Thanks, Chuck

No, clamp opens then flips up and out clearing everything, then cable pulls out very easy

As chum said, loosen the bolt on the throttle cable and remove the end. Now open the clamp block by pulling inand up on those round plastic rods and it will just release the cables. Now loosen the nut on the shift cable and push the aluminum casting aside, freeing the shift cable.

Pushing the cables into the barrel holder helps free the clamp thingy, if it is still hard to unclamp use a screwdriver to gently pry at the bottom.
