I have a friend that has a 1974 boat that has a Ford 302 and a Merc. 888. Funny is I noticed that when the engine is idling (not in gear) I can hear small grinding/banging sound on the rear side of the engine by the outdrive. The engine appears to be smooth though.

When in gear the grinding would be louder, it goes away when the boat is trimmed in a certain way but would come back in turns. I googled it up and found that it could be the U joint/bearing... is it?

How difficult is it to work on this outdrive? I have lots of auto mechanic tools are there any special tools that I need to pull this drive?
