merc 888 outdrive to 260 outdrive.

Would a merc 888 outdrive work in place of a 260 outdrive canthey be interchanged. I have a 1983 260 mercruiser with a 5.7/350 and my outdrive has a chiped tooth on the gearset. I can get two 888 outdrives for free that are in exelent shape,just wondering if they will interchange,and what are the differences in the two drives beside ford and chevy....H

I cant get to the manual at the moment but if my memory is any good the 260 is a 1.32 and the 888 is 1.5.
Other than that the drives are the same.

Ayuh,... The only difference between a 260 drive, 'n the 888 are the stickers stuck on 'em...

86,... The only 1.32 drives were with the 351 motors, 'n later the 454 motors...

Yup, they're fine. Both drives should be a 1.5 ratio. The 233 (Ford 351w) had the 1.32 gears.
