I bought a 12' jon yesterday with a mercury 8hp. Took it out fishing today with a buddy. Really seems to run well. Starts on the first pull. But it doesnt put out much of a rooster tail at all. Never get to the point where is makes this (see pic below). It was windy here today and the lake was pretty choppy about half way across i seemed to lose power and the wake kinda caught up with the boat as it does when you back off the throttle quickly. I'll get the model number tomorrow but I believe it to be an early eighties model, 2 stroke. We didnt have much gear and were under 500 lbs with between the 2 of us.

It should not have a rooster tail .don't mess with success. if that is the jpg of you rig you are good. I would check your lower end lube and water impeller.

Was that pic shot at plane or fast displacement speeds. What's that Jon boat max transom rated for ? An 8 will probably be too basic, if so, don't expect top combo performance.

Thanks guys, but to be clear, this photo is not of my wake. its how my wake DOES NOT look, lol. I'll definatly grab a pic next time I'm out. It is more like the pic below at full throttle.
