Hi....
I just recently put back together this engine...And started her up last night...I used the tank off my 90...the engine ran fine...cept it doesnt want to idle...The 90... I use a 50:1 mix. is that wrong for a 9.8..and if it is..what would be the proper mix? and if the mix is Ok for it..could it be a dirty carb? mix settings? The engine didnt run for about 1 year and started up on the 3rd pull.

Also..is there a special oil for the gearbox? is it a 90 weight? and about how much is needed in there...I know its not much...

THX all

Re: Merc 9.8 questions.....

I would say a good cleaning of the inside of the carb would be a good place to start, since it sat for a year. Since I don't know the year, I really can't give a definitive answer on the oil mix or lower unit fluid. But at even 50:1, it should idle OK. Start by giving us a model number or at least the year of the motor and some more backround info.

EDIT: I see from your other posts, that it's a 1977 model. Oil mix is 50:1(2.5 ounces of TC-W3 oil per 1 gallon of gas) for sure and lower unit fluid is High Viscosity lower unit fluid, available almost anywhere. (Walmart,Dealer, Ect)

Re: Merc 9.8 questions.....

You remove both the fill/drain screw(Bottom one) and the vent screw(Top one). Let it drain out for about 1/2 hour and then refill it from the bottom until it comes out the top hole Put the top screw back in and then pull the nozzle out of the bottom screw hole and replace that screw quickly. Use new screw seals when you do this. The lower unit fluid container will have a tapered nozzel for this procedure. Use only marine lower unit fluid, not automotive!

EDIT: Do NOT remove any phillips head screws!! The screws that you remove will be flat head screws. This is extremely important, as you will be taking the lower unit apart if you take the phillips screw out!!
