Trying to help out a friend here. I know nothing about Mercury outboards but my friend brought his over tonight. He knows that I rebuilt my 110 Johnson and know that engine inside and out and thought I might be able to help him with his small Merc. One look at it and I knew I was dealing with a completely different animal. Anyway I have a manual for my outboard and am good at just following instructions.

Thought ya'll might be able to give us some Ideas what to look for. He was running his Merc and it stuck at full throttle. He used the kill switch to shut it down. When he tried to restart he got nothing. Tonight I did a quick check on the engine. Just as a preliminary check I did a compression check (I know that has nothing to do with the problem but I just like to know what the compression is to start with) 100 PSI in the top and 110 in the bottom cyl. I believe this should be acceptable? Next I checked and was getting no spark so I went for the obvious and disconnected the kill switch, still no spark. What would be the next most obvious thing to check? I was wondering if killing the engine at full throttle might have sheared the key on the flywheel but if this were the case wouldn't you still get spark just out of time?

Re: Merc 9.8 ?

if he sheared the pin on the flywheel, the magnets
aren't turning around and creating spark perhaps?
