Got a '87 Merc 9.8 (110 serial #6563607) and was wondering, is it normal for this motor to run with out an air filter? Doesnt have one and it only makes sence that it should. The serv man mentions nothing about an air filter.

Also, This motor has a "Flush" plug/port at the top of the shaft but it is small. Is that really a suitable port to flush the motor by?

Thanks in advance,
Brent :)

Edit: According to this site (found here on iboats) my motor is an '84 and manufactured in the US correct?

Re: Merc 9.8 ?

have been looking high and low at parts diagrams for all the 9.8 and similar size motors and can not find that any of them have air filters on them........

Do any of these motors run a filter on the carb?

No pre efi outboards have an air 'filter'. What they do have is a spark arrestor. This may be something that looks like a filter but is not a filter. Your motor was indeed built in the U.S of A in 1984 by Mexican immigrants.

Thanks for the info Dunaruna. just seems like good prevent maint to have a filter on a carb to me, and the spark arrestor on a boat makes as much sence to me as "fresh-frozen"
As for the immigrants..... well, ill just leave that one alone for now hahaha.

Thanks for the input!
