I'm working on a lower unit that is stuck in forward gear to a late 60's MERCURY 9.8HP motor. I can get the prop off but I can not get that nut on the inside that turns clock wise to get off. I do not have that special tool the service manual calls for. I've tried just about every other tool I have including a punch but it won't budge. Any suggestions?

thanks

Take it to a dealer and have them get it out for you. Otherwise you'll damage it to the point where you can't do anything with it. It should only take a few seconds if they have the time. Buy your parts from them and they might do it fer nuthin. Start with a water pump impeller and a tube of lube. A new O-ring for the bearing carrier and new propshaft seals wouldn't be a bad idea. Take your gearcase with you, and the serial number of the motor.

Hi Radar,
Are you sure it's the unit that's stuck in forward gear and not a mis-aligned shift linkage? Not hard to do on those motors...
- Scott
