I just got a 2006 Merc 9.9 4-stroke. Never used yet. It's a long shaft and the Inflatable it's on requires a short shaft.

How feasable is it to swap to a short shaft? I don't know if there is a kit (all the parts for the swap) or am I better off trading for a short shaft?. Have any of you tried this yourself or is this a technical job that only a cert. Merc. mechanic should attemp?

As I said, this engine has not seen water yet.

You have to change out the motor leg. Two hours labor, $350.00 in parts and not worth it in my opinion.

TG... it may not seem worth it but I have a $2,300 engine that's 7" too long for my boat. I paid $1,000 for the engine, RIB inflatable and trailer (worth about $5,000 and never used)

If it's something a "weekend mechanic" can do, it's totally worth it to me. Do you know where I can get the parts? I can't find the "kit" online. I suppose a Merc dealer can get it?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

There is no kit...You will need a new motor leg, base gasket, drive shaft, shift rod and water tube. It's a lot of work:) The parts are available from any Maercury, Nissan or Tohatsu dealer.
