We were out the other day and idling across a no wake bay then there was a beep and the starboard motor stalled and would not start. I waited a few minutes then was able to start it and it ran fine. It happened again yesterday this time it took a much longer wait time to start but it started then puling into the doc it died again. Today the motor will not start at all.

Not many Mercury dealers here in Hawaii I may need to tow boat 90 miles to Hilo for a dealer.

Anyone have any ideas before I take the road trip..

Its a 1997 EFI 90HP 4 Stroke only has 50 hrs on it.

could it be overheating ? is the engine peeing ok ?
if you had a warning beep before it shut down the engine is telling you it has logged a fault
could you have sucked up some mud or sand or when was the last time the impeller
was replaced ?

Looks like it is the fuel pump. There is power to the pump and the relay comes but no fuel and no noise coming from pump. Interesting it was very difficult to get anyone to even take a look at it here on the Big Island. No here likes Mercury they say they are heavy and unreliable. There is one merc dealer on the Kona side he says that Mercury just put his name on their website and wanted nothing to do with the motor. The Hawaiians know the water they are in it all year so I hope they are wrong but I doubt it.

glad you found the problem

As for Mercs, i'm not very impressed with mine. I am thinking about changing it for an Evinrude Etec

mine is a 2006 model 115hp and seems to spend more time broken than working and it is one of Mercs flagship
models using the Verado block.

I'm in the UK and was quoted ?600 or $900 for a new oil pump and ?400 or $520 for a starter motor
needless to say ordered them from the us for a fraction of those prices

Well, lets see how they handle the warrantee especially since the dealer here feels no responsibility. I bought an M2 Catamaran out of Providence Road Island they said there was a three year warrantee so hopefully they will ship me a new fuel pump. I suppose we will see.

:) Well I have to say Mercury stood behind their product. I did have a bit of hard time working with the local dealer however Mercury called them up and said to take care of me. Hopefully it was just a fluke and smooth running from here on.
