So I rebuilt the carbs and there are no more gas leaks but still no power. could faulty plugs keep the motor from reaching it's full potential? I'm freaking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also how could I determine the right prop. I've done research and I know i can fit a 14.5 inch dia. Also found out a 17 or 18 pitch is ideal, bt I'm not sure on the number of splines or anyother requirments.

i work on 80's and up motors but i can offer you some suggestions -

does this motor have a distributor and points ? change the points and cap i'm too young to know how to set points but i know thats important .
at any rate you want to do a full check of the ignition system which requires a dva meter .

on a long shot you could try pumping the primer bulb and see if it picks up speed any -

I had tried the bulb thing. the bulb was full and stiff and difficult to pump so I figured that would be normal. The little I was able to pump didn't change the speed. It does have a distributor though.

if thats good - your next step is testing the ignition firstly i would look at the points since they are the cheapest and without those in good shape or not set correctly you will get no power -again i've never set them - my dad did and learned how important they are when it comes to getting the power out of the motor - if you have some mechanical knowledge and a manual it will give you test specs on the magneto and coil output plus it will show you how to set teh points correctly - im not positive but i think you can test those ignitons with a standard voltmeter - if you need the dva feature an adapter can be bought for 60 bucks at cdi electronics and i believe iboats sells them too in fact - you just need to decide wether you want to learn it and sve money or let soemone else do it - they can test the system in 20 minutes an give you an idea of cost - i'd ask your dealer for a suggestion as to who to call -usually dealers dont have anybody old enough that is familiar with old outboards and points and will know of someone to refer you to - our local dealer does that . sorry i cant be more help .

No points on this engine ( assuming it still got the original ignition ?? ), It's 950SS ( Solid State = early Thunderbolt ).

But would agree about testing the ignition, and do a link/sync job ( quick how to here ( use the data for a crossflow engine )).

What kind of boat do you have ( length/weight/hull type ).
What exactly happens when you throttle up ?... some increase in speed until it just bugs down ??

no acceleration at all, just sounds great in neutral and then in gear it has no power. 10mph gps. I have a late 80's stratos 189v it's a 19 foot fish and ski. I know it may be a little big for the engine, but I'm not hoping for 60mph or anything. just want to get on plane and move. HELPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm mechanicly gifted but just not alot of experience with boats in general.
