hi all,
during the dissasembly of my A1 1978 i found except the two small o-rings that fit to the grooves of the u-joint shaft another o-ring at the size that fit s the water hole passage ,having been installed at the end of the shaft. The manual refers that there are on the u-shaft only the two small o-rings.Should I use this o-ring or it will prevent the shaft from fully sticks to the gimbal bore?
The set parts I bought includes four o-rings.Two (same)small for the shaft, one big for the water passage from the upper unit to the bell housing and one at a size between the previous ones.Does anybody knows for where is this?Is it for the u-shaft and the previous owner made a mistake?
And a last question. When fitng the u-joint bellows to the flanges of the gimbal housing is it obligatory to use gasket glue?I reassembled the bell housing I forgot to use gasket glue to the inner of bellows only at its aft end and its a nightmare to undo and start from the beginning. At least the tightening of the crimp clamp was enough strong.

There sould be four.....
That should only have two o-rings that fit into the grooves.....1" diameter.....
I believe the one you are referring to is for the water passage.....
It fits into the circular depression in the bell housing, to seal the connection between the drive & the bell housing, approx. 2" dia.
Lastly, the big one, 4" diameter, fits inside the bell housing to keep water out of the u-joint area.......
Bellows adhesive is reccomended, but not an absoloute must.......
It definately helps seal that area......:)

I recognise the big one 4" you are talking about but the one I say is much smaller ,as i said before a litle smaller than that of the water passage between sterndrive and bell housing.Anyway do you believe there is not o-ring at the end of u-joint shaft?

The last o-ring you are looking at goes on the end of the diveshaft of an Alpha one Gen 2. They have greaseable engine couplers that are longer and need the o-ring to seal in the grease.
In your case just throw it away.
