I recently replaced the shift cable on my Merc 5.7 L Alpha 1. The boat is a 1988 Cruisers inc. with twin Mercs. When I changed the cable everything went together great and I have had the boat out 4 times without an issue. Last time I was out and started the engines to come back in The port side shifter seemed sluggish and stiff and didnt seem to click in gear but once I started to move it seemed ok and I docked with no issue. Tonight we left the dock and cruised around and began to do some tubing. After a short time we heard some knocking from the port drive. When I brought it to idle it was still knocking. I shut the engine down and checked that it was shifting with the motor off and it did shift forward and reverse when I spun the prop by hand. It still doesnt feel like it is clicking into gear though. When I re-started the motor it would not shift into forward or reverse. The cable is moving on top of the motor so I think there is a problem at the drive end of the cable. The knocking I am assuming was the drive not quite in gear. Any help would be appreciated. I will be pulling the boat out soon and pulling the drive to check it out.
Now I know why I like twins ! I would still be out on the lake waiting for a tow. Thanks for your help.
