Been running my boat for about two weeks in Michigan. Runs fin for long periods up to 2 hrs.

Whenever I shut down it backfires/sputters for a few seconds.

I have done a search and have not found any details.

Not sure if I should worry.

Any sugestions.

Need more information about your engine, preferably its serial number and whether it's a carb (2bbl or 4) or EFI.

Try backing the idle speed down a little.

Re: Merc Alpha 4.3 - dieseling

Update: When I let it cool for 30s after pulling a skier. Shuts down great. Only seams to be Dieseling if I shut off before 30 seconds. I used a fuel additive last summer. Can that be reason I did not get the dieseling.

In general, is dieseling a big concern?

In General, yes.... It can make the engine run backwards, and that introduces a whole load of new problems!
