I have recently stumbled upon a very good deal on a used Merc Alpha One Gen 2 outdrive. Since my current Gen 1 is trash and I have been looking for a replacement I was just wanting to ask the experts what exactly would have to be modified on my current setup to accept the Gen 2 outdrive?? Or is it even worth the effort?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A new transom assembly from merc will set you back a little under $2k not including labor.

It beats Merc's 1 year warranty and you can never have enough warranty!

You not only can't you use a Gen II drive on your Alpha I Gimbal housing, keep in mind in your searching that you also need the correct gear ratio. Why not just get a new SEI drive from iboats for about $1500. With 3 year warranty?

Vendor 199 is the SEI drives.

Mercruiser Stern Drive Complete Drive Assembly - iboats.com

I was looking at the SEI route, especially being that the drives are brand new and have warranty.
Thanks for all the replys and help. My question has been answered fully.

Thanks
