We reciently purchased a 1983 Norris Craft boat with a 1986 Mercury 150hp Black Max XR2. The motor is in great shape the paint is still shiny and all of the pistons have the compression of a new motor without a rebuild. However, our only problem is that the motor wants to rest on the ground when it's being stored. We raise it to level trim position and it seems to fall right back to the ground with the foot resting on a board that we put under it. So I believe that it's something to do with the trim system but I'm not to farmiliar with them. Any help is appriciated.

Re: Merc Black Max XR2 Trim

There is a Manual Release valve. It's plastic and they like to break. Look for a large hole in the lower part of the bracket where it clamps to the transom. I forget which side, I think the starboard. Check to see if it's screwed in snugly...NOT really tight. It's plastic.

Also check the fluid with the motor tilted fully up. If it's neither of these, it'll have to be checked deeper. That's where it gets bad. Try the simple stuff and hope for the best.

Thanks Willy I'll have to do that, but I can't right now due to the boat being stored about 30 minutes away. I'll let you know what happens.

I called Norris Craft and they told me that there was most likely a leak in the trim system, so we're going to take it to a dealer. Thanks for you help.

Silly question, but why did you call Norris Craft? They didn't make the motor.

Replace the seals on the pilot check valves, 2 seals about 6.00 each. You can find pn of seal by searching 125 Force tilt/trim leak down.
