Merc Bravo I: Gear oil dripping from top end of shift cable

Greetings - I have a '94 7.4L Merc I/O with Bravo I outdrive. I noticed that there is some gear oil dripping from the top end of the shift cable onto the valve cover. This probably happens mostly while underway, but I could see the resulting mess and a telltale drip on the cable while parked (not to mention a burning oil smell). Have also been noticing a drop in the reservoir level. Any idea what could cause this? I noticed that the cable parts list includes a "sealing washer", but I don't know whether this is to seal against oil leakage or dust intrusion. Thanks!

You have either a lower shift shaft seal defective and leaking, it's in the back of the upper drive, or the back cover seal ring leaking. Both will allow gear lube in the shift linkage were the cable is. Probably the shift shaft seal.
Here is a link to a free online Merc manual for the Bravo drives. Section 3A shows the shift shaft seal and how to replace it.

Thanks for your quick reply Don. I was hoping for a solution closer to the surface, but your diagnosis rings true. I'm wondering if the shift bushing may be worn - could explain both the bad seal and the fine metallic particles I have seen in the oil. Looks like the drive will be spending the winter in the garage...

The online manual is a nice resource. Thanks again!
