I own two Mercurys of the same vinitage, one is a 8hp and the other is a 15hp.

I had them both next to each other with the covers pulled off. The only difference in the two that I could find was the carb size. The carb on the 15hp was bigger. The blocks are the same and everything else is the same, they could be twins of it where not for the difference in carb size's.

My question is this,
If I took the carb on the 8hp and replaced it with a carb ment for a 15hp could I get the motor to put out 15hp?

Re: Merc carb question

The exhaust is tuned different and the reed are different.

You might see a little bit of a difference..but it will not double the hp.

TMD

Re: Merc carb question

Looked at the parts book. All parts are the same including the gear ratio in the lower. Exhaust plate and reeds are the same. The only difference is the part number of the block; But all parts in the blocks are the same (pistons, rings, switchbox, all of them. I think your correct to say that changing the carb will change it to a 15. According to the parts breakdown.

Re: Merc carb question

I'm going to put a bigger carb in it. I'll have an update in a few weeks.
