Got a 1984 305 228 with blown out water jackets ( yep, I screwed up!)..beautiful boat chapperel xlc 197 had for 18 years.. I did a total restoration as original by me 8 years ago..ran great before.. anyone got a spare early bare or close to it 305??? last 3 digits of vin is 221..seems to be elusive!? LOL doesn't hurt to ask..of course standard bore would be nice? Just want to transfer all internals and externals etc.. over to one....own a classic muscle car resto shop..I am VERY cautious of these "newly" rebuilt ones offered here and there..probably don't use "marine" cams lifters etc.. Also am replacing transom.(found the problem when I pulled the engine/outdrive, I started another post for that nightmare!)Thanx abunch! for any info on this or just ANY info on this block..I'm not real "up" with marine engines...just 60/s early 70's Pontiac GTO,s..beginning to somewhat retire and sure would like for the family grand kids to enjoy this boat again.. Thanx again

Buy a fresh brand new crate 350 long block from GM, you can get one at the dealer parts counter, or Summit racing or other catalog.. Pull the heads off of it, install marine head gaskets, core plugs and raw water pump, then use your boat intake manifold and a new set of manifolds and risers. You can add a marine cam if you want but as long as you get the 260hp version that is a truck cam and close enough for a boat to work just fine

Thanx Matt.. I have looked at these 350's did a search on ATK ( the builders)..and alot of bad reviews on the marine ones,,anyway.. (looks like June delivery sadly)..my engine is/was lol a very low houred engine also...also $3000.00 + compared to several hundred if I can just find a block..I own a well equipped shop..combining together a 305 would be easy and ALOT cheaper!..knowing all the parts in my engine ARE marine spec..are the manifolds and risers different for the 350?... Thanx for the info!

305 and 350 are externally identical. Only their bores are different. The engine I recommended is $1,500 last I knew right from GM. If you just need an engine that runs a junkyard truck 350 with new head gaskets, core plugs and water pump will do just fine for a few hundred. Don't get cought up on the marine thing. It's a truck engine with a different cam head gaskets core plugs and water pump. Accessories and starter are marine spec

Thanx again Matt.. this is what I'm confused about..after talking with some "dealers" they are saying because I have a last 3 digit casting # of "221". (1984 block) .they don't have what I need...check out the site.. they list ALL these different blocks for the 305's.."dmk 404, dmk 407 etc...what the heck is the difference on these besides rotation and dipstick location?.. does not all the external parts interchange? manifolds and risers, oil filter fuel pump etc should be the same, right? Why is my "221" an issue? I guess mine is a DM07.. really appreciate any info and thank you!... https://www.high-performance-engines.com/product-p/dm07.htm

It's an issue because you are making it an issue.. you could put a 265 267 283 305 350 or even a 383 stroker In it and it would make zero difference. You have an 84 so any small block chevy 1969 to 1985 will work and really you can change your flywheel and go 1986 and newer. You might as well go 350

I'm sorry not trying to be a pain.I'm embarresed to admit how many hours searching and talking to "venders" for some definitive answers with conflicting answers...I know 1968-1972 GM/Pontiacs engine/head/carb/intake etc.. codes vin#'s etc.. like the back of my hand ( that's what I do/done for 30 years).. but a moron when it comes to marine engines..I assume your the expert on marine engines..so any 1969-1985 350/305 will accept all "bolt on external parts including flywheel, fuel pump, cables, engine mounts etc.."( as my original 305)..correct? except heads..(350 has larger valves I believe).. if so I might go with the 350..I should mention mine is the 305/5.0 228 4 barrel..and I believe an Alpha one outdrive? Work with a 350? You would know this.. Thanx AGAIN!!... Really! I can really help anybody with questions about classic muscle cars..I know alot about them! Thank you Matt.. if in Ga. I'll buy you any drink you want! and dinner or lunch..I mean it!

Yes the blocks, rotating assembly and heads are standard Chevrolet small blocks. So you can go 350 or 383.
