Merc gimbal housing question

We are in the process of replacing the U-joint bellows in a 78 Merc out drive, Alpha I. After removing the old one we found that where it connects on the bearing side, the aluminum has been eatin away by one of natures forces. It's about 2 1/2 inches wide on the bottom curve and about 1/2 inch in. It's right where the clamp holds the bellows on. What would be the best option to repair this or does it just need to be replaced?

Hey...I like that. Now, have you ever installed one of these and if so is there any tips you could pass along that would be of help for us? Also, how important is the $70 tool they're offering?

If you're removing/replacing the gimble ring, then you would need the tool but since the ring isn't in the way of replacing the bearing/bellows (at least on my old 888 drive) then you wouldn't need the wrench.
