Re: Merc Hurricanes 5-7-10hp

The "Hurricane" nomenclature was used on the 2-cylinder 15 and 20 cubic inch models (KG-4 Rocket Hurricane, KG-7 Super 10 Hurricane, and Mark 25, to name a few), and was augmented by a "Super" for use on the 22-cube models (.ie Mark 28 Super Hurricane, Mark 28A, Merc 200, etc.). The 5hp models were referred to as the KF-5 and Mark 5, and the 7.5 models came as KE-4 and Mark 7 models.

The Green Tankers are generally well sought after by modern day collectors, with the 15 and 20 cube models having the largest followings, followed by the earliest of the Mark models (c. 1954-1958) after they ditched the tanks on top.

Re: Merc Hurricanes 5-7-10hp

There was a guy on our lake in WI that had a merc hurricane 10 and someone told me....as a kid....that the boat frame he built and then wrapped in canvass could reach 50 mph. Supposidly the boat weighed only 35lb, but hey, I was young kid, gullible and it was all good, but the boat Was fast. I also remember rumors that the ten was a racing motor and used different bearings in the lower unit, again, I was a kid :).

The Mercury KG7 Super 10 Hurricanes did come as a racing model, the KG7H. The racing model had a different lower unit, designed to be a surface piercing drive with the propeller partially out of the water. There was also a dealer-made model, called the KG7Q, which was a longer shaft version of the racing lower unit for standard transom utility hulls. The Q model was actually an intermediate model that came before the H model... Lots of good info over at www.johnsoldmercurysite.com .
