I bought an older merc outboard yesterday and I was hoping to get some help identifying it since the decals are gone and its been painted.
The guy I bought it from said it was a 1978 or 1979 model year and that it was 15 hp.
The motor was apparantly made in Canada and the serial number is 7067915.
Because of the size and weight of the motor(comparable if not heavier than my 76 Johnson 20 hp!) I am inclined to believe that the hp is actually higher than 15.
The shifter is on the side of the motor and the stripe is blue.
Anybody know how much a 78/79 15 hp should weigh?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: MERC IDENTIFICATION

I think, from the best I can find at maxrules.com, that you have a 1976 20hp Merc there. The serial number fits a Canadian number series from that year for 20hp motors.

I'm not absolutely sure, but the sequence seems to indicate that year and hp. You can go to maxrules.com and check their listing out. Canadian serial numbers are different from US ones, and maxrules is the only site I can find that lists them. However, they don't list any numbers for 15hp earlier than the 80's.

Re: MERC IDENTIFICATION

Thanks for the prompt reply.
Now I have to see if I can get her running, ion is even, at around 110 which is acceptable I think.
The carb was just rebuilt and the motor hasnt been run since.
The seller told me that the engine was dying out the last time he used it and he said he had to use the choke on and off to get back to shore, thats why he had the carb rebuilt.
I may need to look at the fuel pump as well.
Thanks again.
