Merc Impeller Replacement Troubles

I ran into a bit of trouble replacing my impeller on my 1999 225 HP Merc 2 stroke. I got the lower unit off and replaced the impeller kit OK but when I went to put the lower unit back on I wasn't able to get the shift shaft splines to line up. Is there some secret here? I started out with the engine in forward as most posts suggested. I even have a shop manual but it doesn't explain how to line everything back up. I can get the speed-o tube back through, the drive shaft lines up but the shift shaft won't line up. We've tried rotating the shift lever to get it to align but to no avail. In summary everything except the shift shaft lines up. What to do?

Re: Merc Impeller Replacement Troubles

I've never worked on your year of engine, but this is common... If it's like my old V6 it's very difficult to align them properly... I have had to use several different tools to try to move that upper shift shaft into place... Obviously, make sure that are both in the same gear position and just be patient and try to move that upper shift shaft into the right place while carefully raising the lower unit up... Use a screw driver, coat hanger, pencil, anything that will fit up there to move it... And you will need help!...

Also, lub the lower shaft lightly... And if the upper shaft wants to move up when it is not aligned try using some kind of wedge above the top of the shift linkage which is just underneath the powerhead (this is only if it move up on you)...

Good luck.

hello
I sometimes have to clamp vice grips on the shift shaft just below where it exits the steering swivel. that way it does not raise up and I can wiggle it.

Re: Merc Impeller Replacement Troubles

i have found it to be much easier if control and gearcase are in neutral at least on older mercs
