merc in gear

I have a 1971 Merc 500 4 cyl that is always in the forward gear. No neutal or reverse. Had replaced impeller.<br />What happened and the fix?

Is this motor one of the ones w/ a white motor cover? If so, it's probably one that is always in the same gear, that is the motor rotation get's reversed to get reverse operation. Yes the motor gets stopped and started backwards for reverse.<br />Jim

assuming it worked before impeller replacement,<br />sounds like the shifter spline didn't line up.<br />did you have any trouble getting the lower end <br />back on? I had this problem and ended up breaking<br />one of the tables for the shifter cam in the<br />bottom of the lower unit, then it wouldn't shift.<br />hope that's not your problem, it's cast into the<br />inside of the lower unit. luckily my local shop<br />was able to fabricate a piece to fix and I<br />didn't have to buy a new lower unit.
