Merc inline four, trigger assembly function?

Well, my first trigger assembly question isn't faring so well, so let me try a second:

There seem to be two coils on the trigger assembly and four leads eminating therefrom. It would help me to know if the function of each coil is the same as the other. That is, is one coil for two cylinders and the other coil for the other two cylinders?

If each coil is identical to the other (ditto with each ones pair of leads) then the DC resistance as measured by my multimeter should be the same and in my case, they are, or very nearly so.

As I mentioned in the languishing, un-replied-to thread, one of my leads is curiously deteriorated, as if this single wire had been dipped in acid or something. (the other three leads are excellent)

So: I'm left with a little stub of a wire coming out of the plastic to which I can solder a new wire to connect to the switch box, which I'm about to do. But I could do so -- and reassemble the engine -- with a bit more confidence if I had the answer to the question above, namely, are there two identical coils on the trigger assy with identical functions, but for different pairs of cylinders?

If the answer is 'no', I'd feel better about a new trigger assy, and the attending departure of a semi hard-earned C-note . . . .

Um, since I have never run this engine -- it's 'new' to me -- I have no symptoms.

Thanks for any help, opinion, or sly remark!

The encapsulated trigger has 2 identical coils...and my suggestion is to replace it as solder joint will fail over time to degradation of wire.

Excellent! I proceded on that assumption. Fortunately, the 1" stub of wire left on that coil lead looked pretty good, so the solder job is finished, the new lead is now encapsulated in new epoxy and hardening on my bench.

Did I assume correctly that each of the coils is matched with its own two cylinders?

They are not matched to the cylinders but position in trigger. Their just a coil that has a magnet passing by it, the magnet is laided out N-S S-N. As it passes coils it makes either a positive or negative voltage that is sent to switchbox, the switchbox SCR switch only triggers on a positive charge.
