Merc Lubricant questions

So far my manual is telling me to use 4 different lubricants.

2-4-C Marine Lubricant With Teflon
Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube
Special Lubricant 101
Quicksilver Engine Coupler Spline Grease

Since we don't have a marine shop, finding these is proving difficult. Are there generic equivalents or should I order online and get the exact stuff?
I don't want to cause myself more trouble by using the wrong stuff.

Thanks in advance

Re: Merc Lubricant questions

To answer your question..........The manufacture designed your motor and drive....and recomends what you listed for a reason.

One ....we dont know what you have...and it could void a waranty if not useing whats recomended!
Two.......how much do you care for your boat!

And yes there is an equivalent to everything........Cheap or OEM.......your choice.

Me personaly...i use OEM on some things...but choose to use equivalent on other things.

Re: Merc Lubricant questions

I have two inexpensive grease guns, one with 2-4-C and one with spline grease. I use the spline grease for the coupler splines, U-joints and gimbal bearing. The 2-4-C on the prop shaft, gimbal ring hinges, and gimbal ring swivel pins, and anything else that needs grease, like the steering cable. A tube of grease will last for several years and getting the OEM stuff is worth it IMHO.

Quicksilver High Performance Gear Lube

That's your drive gear lubricant. It's a synthetic gear oil that you can get locally.

There's many people here that use Mobil-1 75W-90, Am$oil marine gear lube, Royal Purple syn, Valvoline syn gear oil, and many other synthetic super slippery snail snot oils...............

Either mail order yourself a case of Mercury HP gear lubricant OR, pick one one of the above and change it every year at the end of the season before winter storage.

I don't want to cause myself more trouble by using the wrong stuff.

Being a non-mechanic, I bought/use all 4 (larger tube size) and a grease gun for each; don't mess with changing tubes on the same gun or gets real messy........so when I look at the wall they hang on, makes me think I AM a real mechanic....for about 1 second then I remember I'm not:facepalm::facepalm:

Many a Walmart carries HP Gear Oil and for pretty cheap, some Bass Pro shops carry some of the other lubes.

As some of the guys are saying, you can find adequate substitutes just for me it's easier to use what Merc. recommends in the manual.

BTW, someone posted here a little while back that Merc. might be going to a single grease to replace 2 or 3 of the current ones but I'm struggling finding that post at the moment.
