Greetings boat gurus.

I recently replaced my 1985 Mercruiser M-260 (350 V8) Alpha1 outdrive with a newly remanufactured one.

It (the outdrive) arrived dry and I pumped in the gear lube - that went fine.

Got the boat into the water and started it up. Once I was warmed up, I put it into reverse to pull away from the launch and then into forward to pull out into the lake. I was slowly ramping up my RPMs to make sure everything was ok.

And all was good. Until...

I got her up to about 1800RPM and the drive seemed to come out of gear (RPMs shot up, boat stopped). I was able to slowly limp home at low RPMs so I thought the culprit was a spun prop hub.

So, I changed the prop - no difference. Still not getting into gear. It doesn't even sound like it's trying.

Additional info: engine is mid-ship mount with the "Jack Drive" extension. Drive shaft seems to impart engine rotation properly to the outdrive shaft.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated - especially any that would avoid moving the beast back onto the trailer!

:D

Thanks.

Bill F.
Rochester, NY
Lake Ontario

Unleash the lower shift cable and in a safe place try to shift this unit manually. If that works you know you have a problem with the remote to lower adjustment. If it does not then we are looking at a lower shift cable or spool.

Turns out the lower unit was reconditioned by an incompetent.

I did extensive troubleshooting research and determined the problem was not due to improper adjustment, or the control box cable.

My mechanic and I removed the outdrive - shift cable was ok. So he opened it up. What a mess! Lower half components literally strewn about inside the casing.

I am now in a wrestling match with the guy I bought it from and the outfit that "reconditioned" it.
