I`m doing the exhaust manifold/elbow on a 1987 Merc 350 Mag. There are 4 bolts on the lower part of the manifold in a horizontal row. The bolts on either end are easily accessible. The 2 bolts in the middle are almost flush with the manifold making it near impossible to get a socket on it. Port and starboard are the same. Looks like the factory exhaust set up on there now. Any thoughts on how remove those center bolts? Serial # B531059

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... The center bolts are the same as the end bolts,....

Are the heads rusted off,..??

A 9/16" 6-point socket should turn 'em out,...

Another option is to grind the heads off, pull the manifolds, 'n take the rest out with vise-grips after the manifolds are off,...

Are the walls of your socket to thick? Mabe try a thinner wall socket they are counter sunk.or grind one thinner after put it in your tool box of homemade special tools!

you need a quality thin walled socket.

If the bolt heads are rounded too bad you will have to grind them off. Then I would use studs with nuts and lock washers, a lot of mechanics have specialty tools and think they are for only one application and I'll bet you have a tool that will help you a lot. How about a chevy distributor wrench? Buz

flush with the manifold could mean there rusted away .the center bolts are in a recessed area so make sur you have a thin wall socket.
Last option is pulling the motor or widening the floor

Thanks for the input. The center 2 are not rusted, just flush. The thin walled socket sounds like the first option.

Re: Merc Manifold Replacement

Some advice on replacing the manifolds: Get two bolts longer than the manifold bolts. Cut the heads off. Screw them into the two outer holes. That will support the manifold as you remove the center bolts. Then, depending on the layout of your engine bay, you can either slide the mainfold off the headless bolts and remove it, or, if there's not enough room, remove the headless bolts and lift the manifold. Careful - if the manifold slips, you'll break the spark plugs in half - the voice of experience! Use new manifold bolts. Don't forget to run a drawfile flat across the surfaces of the manifolds and the risers to remove any residual casting slag. I found a strong, thin-walled 9/16" socket at Sears. I suggest you buy two, just in case you crack one as to use it. Spray some liquid wrench on the bolts and let it sit for a while before you try to remove the bolts. I suggest you first loosen the bolts with a breaker bar rather than a rachet. The pressure of the loosening may crack a socket or strip the teeth on a rachet. I used a long 1/2" drive breaker bar and a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter. Watch your knuckles! Good luck. Hy
