I have a link to manual 6 at boatfix.com. Does anyone have a link to manuals 3 & 4?

There are no links for 3 and 4, ebay is your best bet or you buy new.
Manual #6 for your drive is the WRONG one. It doesn't start till 83.

Then tell them that it's not the right manual and that it will only give them an idea of how things go. A general idea is about all they will get. Problem is, they don't know that, and don't know the difference between general and specific.

Re: Merc manuals 3 & 4 online

Thanks. This is redirecting this thread bit, but its related. I'm confussed about my outdrive. When I review the drive descriptions on mercstuff my drive looks like an Alpha one, but the boat is a '78. The boat has been in the family since '84 and we didn't change the drive. I can't say what happened before '84 but not sure why they would have changed the drive when the boat was only a few years old. Is there any reason a '78 pre-alpha would fit the description of an Alpha?

Best thing you could do is post a picture of the drive.

I realize this isn't a good pic, but it's the only one I have right now. Does this help? If not, I can get a better pic tonight.

The things I noticed that made me think it was an Alpha are 1) no loop on top of the drive 2) the sides are smooth not ribbed 3) no preload pin on the shaft inside the drive.

Re: Merc manuals 3 & 4 online

It looks like an Alpha, and Merc does make replacements for the One drives that look exactly like that.
BUT, that will only mean that the manual you need for actual internal repairs of the drive, will be manual #6. For the transom shield, steering, trim, bellows replacement, shift cable replace and adjust, you need manual #4.
Why it has an Alpha on there without you knowing is way beyond my abilities. Might ask other family members if they know, but I am quite sure no one else here know the WHY of it either.
