I have a 1973 mercury model 650. Recently, while salmon fishing on the Oregon coast, my motor started running real bad. It started fine and ran at idle, but after a few minutes at high speed it started to run real rough. It would would bog down and sounded like it was fouling or choking itself. I pulled the cover off later that night and, in the dark with a flashlight, could not see much. The plugs looked fine.

But, while pushing the fuel line bulb, I could see gas streaming out of the bottom carburator. It was not drippping in but looked like a "pee" stream. It was also leaking out of the backside of the carburator. The top carburator was not doing that. It looked like the gas coming in should look like.

My questions is what am I going to need to replace. My guess is the lower jet fell out or broke. Am I close? How difficult will the repair be? I have not done an in-depth look since then, But with fishing season on way again, I need to get my but out of the house and get it done.

Thanks for the help,
Craig

Carb kit should fix it up. Probably has junk stuck in the needle and seat.

Re: merc model 650 carb problem

Hi CB,
from here, it sounds like the float is stuck "down" in the bottom carb. When the float is working correctly, as the carb bowl fills, the float will rise. This inturn will seat the needle valve thus shutting of the gas flow into the carb bowl. If the float is stuck or flooded/saturated, it can't shut off the gas. The result is your symptom.

Carb rebuild kits (complete with ew float) are not expensive.

Might suggest rebuild the carbs. Assuming all are the same age, if one float is bad, likely the others will follow.

Carb rebuild is not difficult (with a manual)

Good Luck
HAVE FUN!

Hey there cbjriles,
I guess I can't offer more help than what was already given, all of which was very good suggestions, some of which I will need to do also. My question to you is, where exactly do you live in Oregon, and if for sure you do live on oregon, how far you from Albany? My brother and his wife and son live in Albany since August 1987. They also enjoy salmon fishing there. He worked at that Millrite Farms there that had a bad explosion and fire back in August and was injured real bad from it, and is still off work recovering. Good luck on your carb problems, as they are really a simple fix. ;)
