merc or yammmy or?

I'm about to buy a new 50 or 60 hp 4 stroke....<br />To me reliability is #1....Are the Merc four strokes as reliable as the other brands, Honda and suzuki / Johnson included .....<br /><br />Thank you....Pond Monkey

Buy the one with the best dealer near you. Havent heard anything bad about the merc 50/60 4stroke. <br />(Or the Yam/honda/suz etc either)

I can't say about other brands but I bought a new carbed Mariner/Merc 50hp 4 stroke in 1996 and still have it on a pontoon boat. It is babied but runs A1 and has maybe 650 hrs. According to Merc the powerhead was made by Yamaha.<br /><br />My local Merc dealer says the powerheads are same but the lower legs different. He says Merc's lower legs are more corrosion resistant than Yamaha lower legs. Mine is run in saltwater but flushed heavily after each outing. I see zero corrosion, even on the inside when changing waterpump impellers.

Ask yourself if Hiroshi or Yukiko can build a better motor than Bubba and Lee Roy can.<br /><br />With the money it takes to buy either, is it more important to keep Hiroshi well fed, and be sure his kids have new clothes, or would you wish the same for Bubba?<br /><br />And how important is it that they spend their money paying for whatever you do?
