I have a 91 Thompson with twin Mercruiser IO's, the paint on them is bubbling in areas and there is some corrosion starting, the boat is kept in the water all season but I really dont want to put anti-fouling paint on them if I dont have to. Is there a type of paint that will hold up if the units are prep'd properly or am I just fighting a loosing battle. If I have to use anti fouling how should they be prep'd for that paint, should somehow treat the corrosion before top coating I would think ?

Sand any corrosion, wipe with thinners, prime with zinc phosphate or chromate, topcoat with black paint of your choice(merc phantom black is my choice). Then get an antifouling paint for aluminum and follow directions.I highly recommend antifouling paint on the drives.Charlie

It sounds like you are having galvanic corrosion. Anti fouling paint won't help. That paint is to keep the barnacles away. There is a mercruiser publication that talks about painting, it provides all the steps and paint numbers. It is a pain in the tail but the paint they use is a two part epoxy paint. After you clean the old paint off, acid wash, and then chromate (alodine) you can repaint it like new. I know that worst marine sells the stuff maybe iboats does too.
Double check that you have your anodes in place.

This is the link that I used. I bought all the paint etc.. that they listed. I also am lucky enough to have a decent paint gun....

I will say that the paint itself flows on better than anything I have sprayed before. The outdrive I painted looked brand new after I was finished.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/technical_information_faqs#1136
