Hello,

I have a 1979 90 HP Mercury Inline 6 outboard. BUT, its in storage 100 miles away and I forgot to grab the prop numbers off of it. I know it's an 18 degree pitch prop, but I don't remember the hub numbers or the prop size. Can anyone save me the drive and tell me what prop & hub fits this thing?! How many splines, etc!?

And does anyone have advice about the pitch. I understand the WOT part of prop pitch. My 16.5' Crestliner Runabout runs about 40-42 mph at 5200 RPM. But it's slow out of the hole. Part of that is because the boat HAD 3 waterlogged sheets of flooring someone had put in there. But I've pulled all that out and I can now lift the tongue of the trailor without the assistance of two other men and a boy...

ALSO... I understand motorcycles much more than outboards. If this problem was on a motorcycle, I'd say that I'd need to replace the steering Head Bearings. I'd discover this by lifting the bike off of the ground and tugging the front wheel back and forth and I'd find play. Well my merc has a similar issue sitting on the transum. I did install a duel piston trim system and that seemed to help, but there is still play. The Transum seems to be intact.

It's the motor itself that moves (I'd say 1.5 to 2 inches back and forth)... Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?! Is my terminology even close to correct!? Is there anything I can do!? Will I need a morgage to do it!?!?

Thank you!!!

The 5200 indicates your pitch is about right. Most I'd drop it to is a 17.

You don't wanna get invilved with the steering head bearings (bike term) if you can avoid it. Just keep the fitting greased to keep it from getting worse.

-W
