Installed a 485HP 7.4L MPI Horizon Mer Reman in a friends boat at the end of last season. Shortly after installing the engine had a slight leak on one of the freeze plugs. It wouldn't be so bad but it was the one which was directly behind the motor mount and cool fuel. Merc said "Sure we Will Pay to fix it" and would allow 1.5 hours for a technician to fix.
OK, all that meant is we need to pull the motor and give it to them, not going to happen. First we thought it was leaking around the edge of the plug, so we wire brushed and JB weld. This did not work, so we supported the engine on a jack, removed the mount and cool fuel. Put a screw drive next to the bottom edge and tapped with a hammer getting ready for the main blow. The hole dang center popped out
Knock the rest out and installed a new plug. Looking at the pieces we could see where the plug was not made correctly and probably some material defect. We have it back together and are hoping that there was only one of these defective plugs.
Even Merc sells crud, can not trust anyone
