Howdy, Dead Eye.

I find the Clymer manuals easiest for the weekend wrench to follow, though the OEM manuals are almost always more detailed (for those who understand them and have the special tools they often call for).

Good luck. :)

Re: merc repair manuals

Hello, Well my son and I just rebuilt our first Merc, a 20 hp 1973. We bought the cylmer manual but it didn't take very long to figure out that you end up reading more about other motors than that of your own. For instance our manual consisted of outboards 3.5- 40 hp from the years 1972- 1989 with 352 pages. So, you can see that there is not a whole lot of detail on just one motor and often there is not even diagrams.

If I was to buy another manual for another motor I would spend the extra bucks and get the manual that concerns only my motor, it will have all the details you may need.

Anther hint that will help you is to get yourself even a cheap digital camera and take lots of pictures as you disassemble then you will have reference for re- assembly, Anyway, good luck and enjoy yourself learing!!
