I've found a place (CDI Electronics) that sells aftermarket ignition systems for Merc outboards.

I've got a 2003 Merc 8hp that is going to be for racing, and racing only.

Right now it's a factory stock engine, I have heard that Mercs do not like to be revved up past the factory 5500 rpm setting and that's there to ke ep them from exploding.

Anyone know anything about this?

I'm hoping to get to 6200 rpm or so.

I haven't baselined the engine on this boat yet so I'm not making changes just yet......

Ordered up the Mercury Tach/system and it should be here tomorrow.

anyway, thanks for the info, also heard Mercs were pretty rough from the die casting inside the engine, lot of rough edges etc.....

Tx,

If the rev limiter is the issue and is built into the electronics,

replace the ignition system with a "racing ignition".

I'm sure they must be available somewhere. Or retrofit something from something else.

Yes, CDI sells them.......and if I install it and what I've heard from a couple of people is true, the engine will vibrate and not enjoy being run at 6200......hence why it was put at 5500 possibly........not to mention it's safer for the average fisherman who jumps a wave or is just out fishing to have safety built in.

But if I push it, what ch ance do I stand of blowing it, I think the red line is lower because the tolerances may not be as close, say as a Suzuki or Evinrude......or any japanese model.

That's what the question is, can this motor take 6200 rpms? :)

I routinely ran a 60J Merc at ~ 7500 to 8000 RPM ... raced on a J runabout. No switchbox then, just points and no rev limiter. Never had a problem, either.

Talk to the guys at CDI. They don't sell what they haven't tested. If vibration is an issue above the stock limiter, they'll know that. Talk to TJ or Clark or....any of them really. They're all good guys.

I talked with Ray yesterday - and he said there is no rev limiter on my engine - and he gave me a LOT of good tips on what to do to beef up the engine wi thout breaking the rules. I should be in business :)

The boat is 99% ready to run, I need to build an extension on the tiller arm next, trim some aluminum on the transom, and then treat the wood and go drive this thing!
