merc sport jet 90 w/ no spark

i'm trying to help a fried with a merc sport jet 90. the only way we can get this engine to start is to unhook the black wire w/yellow stripe. but as soon as we hook it back up, it dies. took it out and ran it, it seems to run ok. you just have to leave that wire unhooked. any help would be appreciated.

Your rev limiter has gone bad. You have performed the test that confirms it: the boat runs with the yellow striped wire unhooked, but not with it hooked up. You can get a replacement for it and that will solve your problem.<br /><br />good luck
